Good news for the Marmolada Glacier: according to the latest studies it stopped retreating and began to advance, already gaining some meters. Scientists think the phenomenon is due to last winter’s abundant snowfalls and to last summer’s not too high temperatures.
&There can’t be more than a cautious optimism though, since to assure that the glacier has truly stopped its retreat many snowy winters will be needed. Nowadays the glacier covers a surface of 200 hectares (in the Forties it extended for 450 hectares).
&Measures has been taken lately to preserve this glacier of the Unesco Dolomites, like the use of geotextiles on a surface of 2,500 square meters.
