Rare orchid in the Parco Nazionale Dolomiti Bellunesi

Liparis loeselii, rare European orchid

News

The place is the Val Canzoi valley, in the municipality of Cesiomaggiore, included in the third zone of the Unesco Dolomites and at the beginning of the nature reserve Parco Nazionale Dolomiti Bellunesi. A few days ago here were found specimens of the Fen Orchid, a rare and endangered species of orchid native to Europe. Nowadays there are only 500 specimens.

This species grows from 8 to 20 cm tall, with ovate leaves, a single stem and small green-yellow flowers, in humid climates at altitudes under 1000 meters, in the Italian regions of Lombardy, Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia.

On the same day specimens of another species of orchids were found, the Lady’s Slipper Orchid, not as endangered as the Fen Orchid, but still rare and included in the list of protected species.
